Call for papers

Computing systems are rapidly evolving into heterogeneous machines featuring many processor cores. This leads to a tremendous complexity with an unprecedented number of available design and optimization choices for architectures, applications, compilers and run-time systems. Using outdated, non-adaptive technology results in an enormous waste of expensive computing resources and energy, while slowing down time to market.

The 4th International Workshop on Adaptive Self-tuning Computing Systems is an interdisciplinary forum for researchers, practitioners, developers and application writers to discuss ideas, experience, methodology, applications, practical techniques and tools to improve or change current and future computing systems using self-tuning technology. Such systems should be able to automatically adjust their behavior to multi-objective usage scenarios at all levels (hardware and software) based on empirical, dynamic, iterative, statistical, collective, bio-inspired, machine learning and alternative techniques while fully utilizing available resources.

All papers will be peer-reviewed including short position papers and should include ideas on how to simplify, automate and standardize the design, programming, optimization and adaptation of large-scale computing systems for multiple objectives to improve performance, power consumption, utilization, reliability and scalability.

Submission guidelines

We invite papers in three categories:
  • T1: Full papers should be at most 6 pages long (excluding bibliography). Papers in this category are expected to have relatively mature content.
  • T2: Extended abstract should be between 1-2 pages long (excluding bibliography). Preliminary and exploratory work are welcome in this category, including wild & crazy ideas.
  • T3: Extended summary of already published work (must be your own) presenting ideas relevant to the ADAPT workshop. These papers should be between 1-2 pages long (excluding bibliography) summarising the contribution of the original work (including link to it). There will be no proceedings for this type of submissions.
Although not mandatory, to support our public effort started in 2007 to enable collaborative, systematic and reproducible research and experimentation on auto-tuning combined with machine learning, crowdsourcing and run-time adaptation, we particularly welcome papers where research material is shared and experimental results can be validated by the community. However, rather than enforcing specific procedure for validation, we decided to allow authors of the accepted papers to include an archive with all related research material and readme.txt file describing how to validate their experiments. We would like to thank authors of 2 papers to provide such archives and we would like to thanks our external volunteers (Alberto Magni from the University of Edinburgh, UK and Sascha Hunold from Vienna University of Technology, Austria) for helping us partially validate results of these papers while again emphasizing difficulties to reproduce complex experimental setups in our field due to specific requirements placed on operating systems, libraries, benchmarks, data sets, compilers, architecture simulators, and other tools.

Submissions should be in PDF formatted with double column/single-spacing, using 10pt fonts and printable on US letter or A4 sized paper. Accepted papers will be published online on the conference website and it will not prevent later publication of extended papers. The proceedings of the full papers and extended abstracts presenting new work will be published in the ACM digital library (ACM ICPS).
